GYMNASIUM AND GYMNASIUM PLUS

You can start in a gymnasium bridge class from the bridge class. This also allows you to start classical Latin right away. It is nice to start in the right profile. We also have positive experiences with this as a school. Often several gymnasium bridge classes start at the same time.

Why grammar school?

The origins of Europe are in Greece and Italy. In discovering the culture of the Greeks and Romans, you find that a new world opens up to you. Things that you took for granted until now appear in a completely different light. Indeed, the Greeks and Romans left a great heritage to the current inhabitants of Europe.

What do you learn in the first year of grammar school

In the bridge class of gymnasium, you are introduced to gods such as Aphrodite, Jupiter, Mars, Juno and Hades. You learn about the hero Hercules and you already read in Latin about Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. You will hear beautiful and touching stories and discover how the Romans and the Greeks built temples to their gods. In the process, you will see that many modern buildings still have features of their Roman and Greek predecessors. In addition to culture, in the gymnasium bridge class you will also learn the language of the Romans, Latin.

Gymnasium Plus

Do you want more challenge than you currently get in elementary school? Or maybe you are gifted? Do you like having time at school to explore your own interests and questions, your way? Do you like being in class with other children who, like you, are ready for something extra at school? Then Gymnasium Plus is for you!

The teachers who teach this class go through regular class material a little faster. This creates time to explore with classmates through research into questions that interest you. There are also several fun field trips scheduled. You will have a mentor who knows a lot about your development, who can support you in your learning process and guide you socially and emotionally. To make sure that you are in the right place, you will take our school's Intelligence Structure Test (IST) free of charge before registration. You can sign up below to participate in the IST. The test will be taken on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. You can take it in the morning or in the afternoon.

Have questions?
Ask them at our Open Day, on Jan. 27, 2024 or come to the Gymnasium Information Evening on Feb. 7, 2024 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Classical languages and Greek

In the second school year, you will receive Greek in addition to Latin. For upper school, students choose at least one classical language to complete their high school exams with the "gymnasium" designation.

Classical Cultural Formation

Classical cultural education is woven into our subjects Latin and Greek. Because of this, at the gymnasium you do not have to take the subject CKV in the upper school.

STEM subjects

Are you a student interested in mathematics? Then it is good for you to know that at the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum special attention is paid to the exact, mathematical subjects, such as mathematics A/B, mathematics D, physics, chemistry, computer science.
Students with a nature profile (nature & technology, nature & health) follow in the fifth year the extra subject Science-quest (in the chemistry classes). Science-quest is a simplified form of science philosophy and tests from the science subjects.

Giftedness

We provide additional challenge and guidance for these students in both the lower and upper grades. We assist students with their executive functions, such as "learning to learn" and self-direction so that students have adequate learning and work habits.

Profile choices

From the fourth year you start within your chosen profile. Our school counselor helps you with your orientation on study and profession. This orientation begins in class 3 and enables you to make a responsible choice: both for the profile and the subsequent course. The subject package depends on the choice of profile. Students can choose from the following profiles:

  • Nature & technology
  • Nature & health
  • Economy & society
  • Culture & society

Introduction day students vwo 4

After the profile choices, you will again enter newly composed classes. We therefore find it important that you get to know each other well during an introduction day in Aquabest. This will take place on a Friday in the first weeks of school.

Olympiad School

At our school, the individual talent development of our students is central. That is why we participate in olympiads: national competitions for havo and vwo students in areas such as chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and geography. Students who participate in these competitions are given the opportunity to study the subject in question in extra depth. They can then express their talents in the olympiad and advance one round at a time.

Olympiad Seal of Approval

The Lorentz Casimir Lyceum is an Olympiad school and has the Olympiad seal of approval. This shows that the olympiads at our school are widely supported and not dependent on one teacher.

Additional languages

Did you know that at our school you can have an extra language put on your diploma? You then do not take the classes at the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum, but we do facilitate the possibility that it will eventually be a mark on your diploma. Think Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish.
